A 65-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man were shot at in different parts of East Palo Alto this week.  The shootings, which occurred on Monday, March 26, appear to have been unprovoked.  East Palo Alto Police say the male victim, who was uninjured, was on his way to his second job, and was sitting in traffic on Scoffield Street near Capitol Avenue, when the suspect, identified as Oscar Alfredo Tapia Carmona, a 30-year-old East Palo Alto resident, drove up to his car, pointed a gun at him and shot at him about 5:55 p.m.on Monday evening.

Tapia Carmona then fled in a silver sports utility vehicle and was chased by the male victim. During the chase, the shooter drove along Newell Road at Woodland Avenue and saw the 65-year-old female, who was walking home from a 7-11 store where she had just purchased groceries.

According to the police, he fired at her twice, hit her in the arm and the force of the bullet knocked her into nearby bushes.  The male victim, who was chasing the suspect, stopped the chase to aid the female victim.

Tapia Carmona, then drove into Palo Alto, where he was located by Palo Alto Police a short time later in the 400 block of Emerson street, and was arrested. His car was found abandoned in Palo Alto in the 100 block of Hamilton Avenue.

After his arrest, Tapia Carmona was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on
charges of attempted murder, elder abuse, carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle, and driving with a suspended license.

The East Palo Alto Police Department is urging anyone with any information about the shootings to contact the department: with an anonymous email to epa@tipnow.org, an anonymous text from a cell phone to 650-409-6792 or an anonymous voice mail by calling 650-409-6792
