Bay Area SV Gives event on May 5, 2015
Just one week remains before Silicon Valley Gives, the online giving day on May 5 to support local charities, and more than $3.7 million in matching gifts and prizes is available to participating nonprofit organizations. More than 850 organizations are registered to participate.
Silicon Valley Gives – also called SVGives – is hosted by Silicon Valley Community Foundation with lead sponsorship from Microsoft. The event aims to raise millions in charitable donations for nonprofit organizations in San Mateo, Santa Clara and San Benito counties during 24 hours of online giving. To gain attention from potential donors, SVCF will host events at Microsoft retail stores, selected Safeway markets and other locations on May 5. People can support their favorite charities by making online contributions starting at just $10 at svgives.org.
“On May 5th through SVGives, people have the chance to amplify the effect of their donations because of the generous sponsors offering matching gifts and prizes that will benefit nonprofit organizations,” said Mari Ellen R. Loijens, SVCF’s chief business, development and brand officer.
For example, during the 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. hours, Skoll Foundation will provide dollar-for-dollar matches for donations to any participating nonprofit on a first come, first served basis up to $50,000 in each hour. And all participating nonprofits are eligible for $5,000 prizes that will be awarded at midnight, 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. by Silicon Valley Community Foundation to the nonprofit with the most unique donors in those hours.
On May 5, SVGives volunteers will be onsite at the Microsoft stores at Westfield Valley Fair mall, in Santa Clara, and at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. Volunteers will also be present at two Safeway markets: at 3970 Rivermark Plaza in Santa Clara, and at 1530 Hamilton Ave in San Jose.
Media sponsor Entercom will publicize the event on its stations KOIT (96.5 FM), KFOX (98.5 FM) and KBLX (102.9 FM). In addition, SVCF is building momentum for the day among donors with a print and digital advertising campaign across the region. For a second year, PayPal will also support SVGives. PayPal will donate an extra 1 percent to the benefiting nonprofit for every donation made with PayPal on May 5 at svgives.org, up to $100,000 in matching funds for Silicon Valley Gives 2015.
