On January 30 of this year, East Palo Alto City Manager, ML Gordon, formally announced his retirement. But this week, it was announced that Gordon was hired as the new general manager of Mountain House, CA, a city of nearly 10,000 people, which is located near Tracy, CA.
According to an article in the Tracy Press newspaper, Gordon was hired over five finalists by the city's board of directors to be Mountain House's new general manager on February 13. There were originally 65 applicants for the position. Nineteen made the first cut and 15 of the nineteen were interviewed. Of the ten candidates who were chosen, five became finalists.
In the Tracy Press article, Celeste Farron, one of Mountain House's board of directors, is quoted as saying that Gordon was the clear-cut winner.
When asked about his new position with Mountain House, Gordon said that even though he is retiring, he didn't want to stop working. He said that he had lived in Mountain House for five years and had moved from there when he became East Palo Alto's city manager.
“It's a new community," Gordon said. "They were looking for a city manager. They need someone to assist them. I'm confident that I can do some good there.”
Several East Palo Alto city officials expressed their surprise when they were asked what they thought of Gordon accepting a new position so soon after announcing his retirement as East Palo Alto's city manager
City Council member Carlos Romero said, “I was completely floored.... But he is a free agent. We're glad we've had him for eight and a half years.”
City Council member David Woods said, “I am happy for ML.”
Before he became East Palo Alto's city manager nearly two years ago, Gordon served as the city's assistant city manager and he was also in charge of the city's Human Resources Division.
