The East Palo Alto Police Department announced that it had arrested 25-year-old East Palo Alto resident Leylani Simmons and charged her with a homicide, with driving under the influence of alcohol and with evading police.

Simmons was arrested at Stanford Hospital Monday where she was taken on January 17, after the car she was driving was involved in a solo collision at the intersection of Pulgas Avenue and East Bayshore Road.

The police said that shortly before Saturday’s accident, an officer had observed Simmons driving her car recklessly near Camelia Drive. When the officer attempted to make a traffic stop, the police said that Simmons failed to yield and sped away causing the accident.

The 22-year-old female passenger who was riding with Simmons was partially ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Simmons was also partially ejected from the car, but suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Stanford Hospital where she was hospitalized.

After her arrest at the hospital, Simmons was taken to the San Mateo County jail and charged with other crimes, which included a No Bail arrest warrant from Santa Clara County for reckless driving and defrauding an inn keeper. She was also booked on a $5,000 warrant for driving with a suspended license.
