The East Palo Alto Police Department will send eight members from its department to attend the funeral services for four Oakland police officers who were murdered in Oakland on Saturday, March 21.

Two of the slain Oakland police officers -- Sgt. Mark Dunakin and Officer John Hege -- were shot and killed during a routine traffic stop. The two other officers -- SWAT Sgt. Daniel Sakai and Sgt. Erv Romans -- were killed in an Oakland apartment as they were trying to apprehend Lovelle Mixon, the murderer of the first two officers. Mixon, a 26 year old parolee was killed in the shootout.

The shooting of the officers has been called “the single deadliest murder of police officers in the Oakland Police Department’s history.”

The officers’ deaths have led to an outpouring of condolences from all over the world. President Barack Obama expessed his condolences this past Wednesday.

On Thursday, East Palo Alto’s Police Chief Ron Davis said, “The East Palo Alto police department shares in the tragic loss of our four comrades in Oakland who were shot and killed in the line of duty last Saturday.  It was an extremely dark day for law enforcement and all communities.  I can only hope that this tragedy serves as a sober reminder of the risk and sacrifices our officers take daily.

“I ask that the community pray for the families of the slain officers and the Oakland Police Department, and provide the level of support we did when our own officer, Richard May, was shot and killed in 2006.  The Department will send representatives to the funeral to pay our respects and provide comfort to a Department that is suffering much.  As a proud 20 year veteran of the Oakland Police Department I am personally saddened by this tragedy.  I do, however, find solace from the calls of support and condolences received from many in the community.”

The service for the four slain officers will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 27 in the Oracle Arena. The arena is located at 7000 Coliseum Way in Oakland.

Among those who will be attending the funeral representing the East Palo Alto Police Department are Police Administration Manager, Melinda Trammell, Sergeant Jeff Liu, Records Clerk Evelia Ilarraz and Officers Steve Humrich, Tommy Phengsene, Rock Stilwell, Kevin Ferreira and Clint Simmont.

Officer Elizabeth Lam, who is the Community Service Officer for the East Palo Alto Police Department, said that more East Palo Alto officers could not attend the service since they had to remain in East Palo Alto to protect the city.
