Attempted Murder of a Police Officer

On April 17, 2009 at approximately 2227 hours, East Palo Alto Police Officer Matafanua Lualemaga was on routine patrol near the intersection of Kavanaugh Drive and Gloria Way. While Officer Lualemaga patrolled near the intersection Kavanaugh Drive and Gloria Way, he heard gun fire in the area. Officer Lualemaga traveled onto the 2500 block of Gloria Way from Kavanaugh Drive and saw a black male suspect standing in front of 2590 Gloria Way discharging a firearm into the air.

When Officer Lualemaga noticed the black male suspect discharging a firearm into the air, he immediately stopped his patrol vehicle, exited it, identified himself as a police officer and confronted the suspect from a position of cover and concealment. At that point, the suspect pointed the handgun toward Officer Lualemaga and shot at him approximately five times. While Officer Lualemaga avoided being struck by gunfire, he immediately requested assistance.

Officer Lualemaga noticed the black male suspect run into the home located at 2590 Gloria Way, however, from his vantage point, he wasn't able to see what part of the home the suspect ran into. While awaiting the arrival of additional police personnel, a shooting victim was located in the driveway of 2590 Gloria Way. When additional police personnel arrived, the shooting victim was safely extracted from the area by police officers.

The victim, identified as Corona Lynn Crowell, a 48 year old, East Palo Alto resident, was immediately treated Menlo Park Fire Engine Company #2, and she was subsequently

transported to a local hospital where she is listed in stable condition. After Crowell was extracted from the area, police personnel from various allied agencies arrived to assist and established a perimeter around the home of 2590 Gloria Way.

During the preliminary investigation of the shooting, East Palo Alto Police learned that there may be two toddlers present in the home, a 3 year old girl and a 4 year old boy. Having this information, the East Palo Alto Police Department immediately enlisted assistance from the San Mateo County S.W.A.T. Team and Negotiators. Several attempts were made to contact persons in the home via, megaphone, residence phone number and public address system, and several calls into the residence met with negative results.

After several failed attempts with making contact with anyone in the home, the San Mateo County S.W.A.T. Team entered the home. Once inside, the San Mateo County S.W.A.T. Team safely located and extracted the toddlers from the home. The toddlers were unharmed and turned over to East Palo Alto Police Detectives. The toddlers are in good health and are receiving proper care and attention to their needs.

Detectives from the East Palo Alto Police Department are actively investigating the attempted murder of an East Palo Alto Police Officer and are developing leads.
